The other day at La Parilla in BH, Y ordered her usual tamarindo and I my usual horchata.
As she left me to wash her hands I had an epiphany as I sneaked a sip of her drink. It was so sweet! Too sweet in fact.
In my head I flashbacked to all the times I have ordered horchata as other friends ordered tamarindo. As I ran in my head through all those moments I realized that my fellow US born pocho pals usually ordered horchata (or jaimaica) while my non- US born pals usually order tamarindo.
Is this true?
So please answer me this you Pachucoville cruisers: DO US born Chicano/as prefer Horchata to Tamarindo and non US born Chicanoa/s prefer Tamarindo to Horchata.
And why?

Tamarindo, non US born Chicana.
So I have several reasons why I pick Tamarindo over Horchata...
For one, to me Tamarindo is a lot more refreshing than Horchata...
Another reason, I prefer the Salvadoran Horchata over the Mexican Horchata. Usually I can only find the Salvadoran Horchata in a Salvadoran restaurant. I just don't like the milk they put in the Mexican Horchata...
I also like the tartiness of the Tamarindo...
My favorite is my nana, Melita's delicious homemade Tamarindo... mmmmm so good.
=) Y
I'm U.S. born, I order horchata (but prefer limonada); my mom (Mexican born) also orders horchata. Sorry, doesn't help prove the theory.
I don't know if there's much to the theory, the best definitions I think fit are cultural Americans tend to be fixated on sweets; sugar, cokes, cakes, candies, it's all about the sweetness. Born and raised on this side of a fictional fence but more with the salty/limony taste for sweets, which made usa candies mostly overpoweringly sweeeet. I don't drink any of the aguas if I see they come from some stupid syrup company or if I have it once and realize it's just sugar water with a flavor blend. One of my favorite places makes a mean limon/pepino blend that's just perfect!
siempre tamarindo.....
I usually pick horchata. I love tamarindo, but not to drink. Oh, and I'm a US born Chicana.
Thanks for participating folks!
I'm a US born Salvadoran and I always order horchata over tamarindo, but I always sip someones tamarindo if they have it!
